How Do I Get My NY Real Estate License?2021-10-13T17:50:29-04:00

Here is a step-by-step approach to getting your NY real estate license:

  • Submit an application form and the correct fee to the Department of State.
  • Sign up to a 75 hour state-approved real estate agent course.
  • If you already passed a 45 hour course prior to July 1, 2008 you only need to take a remedial 30 hour course.
  • Pass your real estate license exam.
  • Get sponsored by a New York real estate broker.

You need to be 18 years old, with no criminal record and a current New York State driver’s license or other ID card in order to apply.

How Long Does It Take To Become a Real Estate Agent in New York?2021-10-13T17:49:03-04:00

Most people gain their New York department of real estate license within a few months.

To get licensed in New York, you need to complete 75 hours of coursework. This is done by taking a state-approved salesperson qualifying course like ours. In theory, this can be completed within a week. However, this depends on how much time you have to dedicate to it. It is usually quicker to take a course online than in person. This coursework is valid for two years. You will have to find continuing education real estate courses to complete prior to renewal.

Once you have completed the coursework, you can take the 1.5 hour licensing exam. There are limited places available on the exams, so you may have to book your exam up to two weeks in advance. Tests are scored as a percentage and you’ll need to get 70% or more to pass. They are then sent away to be scored and there is no set timeline for this. You can take the exam as many times as you like, but if you fail you’ll need to reschedule and wait for the next test date.
