How Can You Become a Real Estate Agent in NY?

The New York Board of Real Estate Agents requires that all potential real estate agent applicants pass the state real estate exam. You can’t practice or obtain your real estate license in New York without passing this exam. You’ll also need to meet the following state-specific requirements.

You must:

  • Be at least 18 years old when you apply for your license.

  • Complete a 75-hour real estate course approved by the New York Department of State.

  • Receive sponsorship from a licensed New York real estate broker or mortgage broker.

  • Not have any felonies on your criminal record.

  • Have a valid New York photo ID when you apply for your license.

Become a Real Estate Agent

It would also be beneficial to familiarize yourself with laws like the Fair Housing Act and Equal Credit Opportunity Act to help you better understand the real estate transaction process.

New York Reciprocal Agreements

The state of New York participates in partial reciprocal agreements. This means that if you are a licensed real estate agent in New York, you might be able to practice real estate in some other areas without having to pass their licensing requirements.

States that offer partial reciprocity to New York agents include:
